The potato!! Do you know where it was first domesticated? 🥔🥔🌎

It was 8000 BC in the areas of Peru, Bolivia and Chile where indigenous people first cultivated and domesticated the potato. It wasn’t until 1576 that the visiting Spanish conquistadors were introduced to the potato and took it back to Europe.

⚜️This magnificent crop has changed history and is said to have contributed to the rise of Western Europe in 1600 to 1800 because it could provide calories and nutrients to the armies.

🇮🇪 It became such an important crop for Ireland that the population grew. But unfortunately a potato disease of the crop wiped out the potato and there was the Great Hunger in Ireland in 1845. 
.
🇺🇸 But it wasn’t until 1801 that it was introduced to America via Thomas Jefferson and his love for French fries. 
.
☣️It then prompted the pesticide race because they became so popular and the most loved vegetable around the world.

👨🏾‍🚀The coolest part is that in 1995, the potato was the first plant NASA astronauts took to space to grow. The potato grows sprouts and multiplies easily. So now, we have potatoes in space!!
